Let me just bottomline this for you. Below is the 10 year annualized return of your primary holding (SCHD) INCLUDING all dividends, and all of the supposed “dividend growth” it has earned for the past 10 years, compared to a variety of other big, stable, low expense ETFs: -SCHD - 11.35% (your “dividend growth” fund) -SPY - 12.91% (SPDR S&P 500 Index Trust) -VUG - 15.21% (Vanguard Growth Index Fund) -IWF - 15.94% (iShares Russell 1000 Growth Fund) -QNEQ - 16.35% (Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index) -VGT - 20.72% (Vanguard IT Index Fund) -XLK - 20.79% (SPDR Tech Sector Select Fund) -SMH - 27.91% (VanEck Semiconductor ETF) Based on the returns above, if you had all of your $171,000 in SCHD, in 10 years you’ll have $523,669 INCLUDING all dividends. If you put it in the best performer above (SMH) you would have $2,539,182. If you simply put it in the S&P 500 (SPY) you’d have $609,274 - 16.35% more than if you maintained your current strategy. So as you can see, you could have between tens-of-thousands to literally MILLIONS more dollars by dumping your “dividend growth” strategy. If you’re not at least matching the S&P (you’re not), perhaps the most stable, highly diversified stock market index that exists, then what’s the point??? You’re managing 30 holdings and doing all of these incredibly complex calculations, and you’re doing WORSE than if you just bought one fund and never thought about it again. I guess you wouldn’t have any content for your RUclips channel, but you’d have a lot more money and free time. And yes, I know your entire portfolio isn’t in SCHD, but it might as well be, because your overall yield is exactly the same (3.5%) and the stocks you own are mostly (if not completely) duplicative of that fund. If these figures don’t convince you that your strategy isn’t working, then nothing will. Good luck!

I’ve watched a few more of your videos and crunched your numbers, trying to understand your thinking. Now that I do, it’s clear that your whole strategy is actually based on capital appreciation (price growth), NOT dividend growth (an entirely meaningless metric) as you constantly claim. You might not think it is… but it is. Your premise is that so-called “dividend growth” stocks (a terrible misnomer) tend to increase in value, and as your portfolio appreciates, you’ll be paid dividends on a larger chunk of capital. The percentage yield will still be tiny, and less than you could get almost anywhere else, but a tiny percentage of more money is more money… so I guess that’s winning? Your obsession with “dividend growth”, however, makes absolutely no sense. It’s completely irrelevant, in fact. Why? Because when a company raises its dividend, it’s usually just to keep the yield roughly the same as it was. Sometimes the yield goes up a little, and sometimes it goes down (in some cases a lot, like Walmart, which went from 2.45% ten years ago to 1.39% today). What you call “dividend growth” is merely an accounting adjustment to maintain a relatively consistent yield. The only reason the stocks and funds you’ve chosen raise their dividends (in pennies, not percentages) is because their stock prices are increasing (slowly). If the price never goes up, the dividend never needs to be adjusted to maintain a consistent yield, which is why other companies don’t “grow” their dividends. But in either case, the YIELD stays roughly the same, so it’s entirely meaningless. Stock prices go up, inflation goes up, and the pennies they pay you quarterly go up, but nothing ACTUALLY changes, because the YIELD doesn’t go up. I don’t get how you can’t see that. Your “cost on yield” metric, which you seem to think is super meaningful, is a false premise. You calculate the dollars they pay you TODAY against the price you paid for the stock MANY YEARS ago. I don’t even think you’re inflation-adjusting your numbers. The simple fact is, ANY good investment increases in value over time, and as it does, you make gains from a larger pot of capital. There is nothing special about dividends in this regard! I bought Apple stock about 15 years ago for $7 per share. Today it’s at $190. In the past year, Apple has gone up 8.47%, which is approximately a $15 per share increase. If I used your silly “cost on yield” metric, It would tell me I’m making a 214% return! WOW!! But in REALITY, I’m obviously only making 8.47%. Do you see how ridiculous this is? By using this metric, you’re FOOLING YOURSELF into thinking you’re doing really well, when in fact, you’re not. The ENTIRE financial and investing industry judges performance by how much you make on your CURRENT balance, not your original balance (duh)! I can’t even imagine where you got this crazy idea from. Maybe some seminar trying to sell the idea of “dividend growth” stocks? Bottom line, the companies you’ve chosen to invest in appreciate more slowly than the overall market, and WAAAYYY more slowly than ACTUAL growth stocks. The fund that makes up half of your portfolio (SCHD) has increased in value 113% in 10 years. A popular S&P 500 fund (SPY) has gone up 178% in the same period. That’s a huge difference, but let’s look at some growth stocks: AAPL, one of the biggest and safest stocks there are, has gone up 786%. META is up 669%. GOOG is up 543%. TSLA is up 1,184%. The Nasdaq composite (QQQ) is up 403%. Sure, your fund pays you a 3.47% dividend, but that isn’t NEARLY enough to make up for its underperformance. Not to mention that SPY also pays a dividend of 1.34%, and QQQ pays .62%. I actually make about 4 times as much dividend income as you without even trying. I don’t even really think about it. It’s just a nice little bonus that shows up every quarter, but I would NEVER base my entire investing strategy around it, because if I did, I’d have a LOT less money. If I had been following your strategy over my 20 years of investing, my portfolio would be a small fraction of what it is today - at least half, if not less. You are missing out on SO MUCH potential growth, all for the peanuts these companies toss at you every 3 months. If you were being honest with your viewers (and yourself) you would clearly show your portfolio’s ANNUAL growth rate. You show a total dollar figure, which includes dividends, but you carefully avoid showing the time period. Why not be transparent and break it out for us? What is your portfolio’s growth year-to-date? What was ‘23… ‘22, and so on. I suspect you don’t show it because it’s not an impressive figure. I made 31% last year and am up 10% so far this year (and I’m not even including the $24k+ in dividends I make each year… because they don’t mean much). Anyway, I’m glad I thoroughly researched your strategy, and after doing so, I’m even more convinced than ever that it’s completely insane. You seem young, so there is still time for you to stop this nonsense and build a portfolio that will actually provide you a good retirement. I hope you do, but if you think this works for you… great. Good luck!

AAPL lacks a proper runway for maintaining profit levels. Yes, the people buying iPhones will keep doing it when they can. The level of fixed recurring revenue streams though is lacking. The ecosystem business Apple thrives on might not survive any economic downturn. I still cannot believe MSFT isn't his main tech holding. B2B is where it is at as it isn't easy moving out of the MSFT ecosystem. Look at the Office product alone and now as a recurring stream of revenue with little add-ons such as the AI space creeping in, you can see long runways for revenue and revenue growth. What is Apple's play for future growth that isn't being combated by other tech giants. AR? Good luck AAPL.

It would seem counterintuitive to place billions into a holding, that buys up in the thing you already own. This is only guesses, but my bet is Bill will just end up withdrawing his billions and that would hurt Buffets dividend payout more than the loss from not having MSFT..

LOL! This just shows how ridiculous your obsession with dividend growth is. WHO CARES if the dividend grows each year for 50 years when, for example, Walmart is only currently paying 1.39%??! What good has 50 years of growth gotten you?? You aren’t even making half of inflation, so you’re actually losing a LOT of money each year. In fact, only 14 of these 53 companies are paying a yield higher than current inflation, and only 28 are paying more than the past 20 years average inflation (2.53%). So again… what is so great about dividend growth?? Can you please explain your thinking, because it seems completely insane to me. And btw, where on earth did you get the 10.53% yield for LEG?? Everywhere I look says it’s only paying 1.63%. And you say MMM is 6.63% but I see 2.67%.

It's like they are buying the competition and then shutting them down which is never good for end consumers.

One small point, but the Portfolio Cash is a fixed Cash Value and works out at about x% at the current Variable Portfolio Value, and not the other way round. The Dividends are fixed Cash Values and work out at about x% at the current Market Price, and not the other way round. Also, you didn't mention Income Tax on the dividends.

Good points on msft's upside, but it's ex-date was yesterday. Bummer. I was already geared up to add Allstate to my divi collection this week anyway.

One thing that always should be taken into account looking at long time yields is the fact that yields diminish by inflation. While the absolute number seems rather high and lovely, realistically the relative number in turns of purchase power is a little lower. That is not to say that the numbers are bad by any means. It's just to have a more realistic outlook as to what it REALLY means.
